The composition features Diana in flowing classical robes against a beautifully aged blue ground, with intentionally distressed, timeworn surface effects that recreate the appearance of an excavated Roman fresco. Warm ochre, terracotta, cream, and muted blue tones give the piece an exceptionally atmospheric, Old World character.
The original ancient image on which this work is based dates to the Roman period and is associated with the archaeological discoveries around Pompeii and Stabiae. This example is a 20th-century decorative reproduction, professionally presented and retaining a Smith’s Picture Framing & Art Gallery, Fort Lauderdale, Florida label on the reverse.
