A charming 19th-century French mythological painting depicting a young nymph playfully surrounded by three putti in a wooded landscape.

At the center of the composition, the partially nude young woman is wrapped in a rich blue drapery that the three mischievous cupids appear determined to pull away. One tugs at the fabric near her feet while the others gather around her, giving the scene a wonderfully playful and theatrical quality.

The subject belongs to the romantic mythological tradition so popular in 19th-century French painting, combining the lighthearted sensuality of Rococo imagery with the darker, atmospheric character of a woodland setting.

Deep shades of blue, brown, and green create a moody backdrop against which the warm flesh tones of the figures stand out beautifully.

Good antique condition overall. The painted surface shows age-related patina and craquelure. The antique frame has undergone previous restoration and retains scattered small losses, wear, and imperfections to the gilded gesso, as shown in the photographs. See less
