Stunning pair of bronze resting lion bookends in the style of Antonio Canova. The lions sit atop a cherry wood base. These are heavy and substantial pieces, quite beautiful.
The lions are inspired by Antonio Canova’s tomb for Pope Clement XII, inaugurated in St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome in 1792. His work was immediately celebrated as a masterpiece of Neo-classicism, particularly for its monumental guardian lions. The lions became highly influential, inspiring Canova’s later works and numerous copies across Europe, including reproductions at Chatsworth made from plaster casts of the originals in Rome.
