There’s a quiet formality to this antique chest — it’s in the weight of the ash, the crisp ebonized lines … Read more There’s a quiet formality to this antique chest — it’s in the weight of the ash, the crisp ebonized lines that frame all eight drawers, the ornate brass hardware standing out like jewelry against the grain. Up top, two pairs of small drawers flank one taller center drawer; below, three full-width drawers carry the weight of the piece down to a molded plinth base. The ash has mellowed to a deep honey gold, its grain rippling and catching light differently from every angle. Reeded pilasters run up each corner like fluted columns, and the original brass hardware, ornate fan-form pulls dotted with tiny florals, have a soft, aged glow that only comes with time.

Stamped “Jas Shoolbred & Co.” to the drawer frame. Founded in the 1820s as a Tottenham Court Road drapery, the firm began designing and manufacturing its own furniture in the 1860s/70s and grew into one of London’s first large department stores, later holding a Royal Warrant.

Equally suited to an entryway stacked with linens or a study anchored by its quiet, weighty presence.
