The Sovereign Legacy: A Late 19th Century Persian Heriz Masterpiece of Splendor
This hand knotted wool antique Persian Heriz rug from the late 19th century is distinguished by the monumental geometry and uncompromising character associated with the finest historic weavings. Its commanding central medallion is built around a many-petaled rosette, an iconic motif associated with beauty, spiritual order, and the perfection of the natural world. Layered angular palmettes, serrated leaves, and cruciform floral devices radiate outward in disciplined symmetry, giving the medallion the presence of a heraldic emblem. Four smaller lobed compartments enrich its architecture, while their stylized botanical forms reinforce themes of flourishing life and abundance.
At either end, imposing flaming palmette pendants extend along the central axis, their serrated blue forms resembling stylized lotus or palmette blossoms transformed through the geometric language of Heriz weaving. Lotus-derived imagery carries longstanding associations with purity, rebirth, and immortality, while the upward-reaching foliage suggests vitality and spiritual ascent. These dramatic pendants create a powerful visual progression through the carpet, lending the exceptional composition a sense of ceremony befitting an important late 19th-century example.
The expansive red field is alive with angular vines, rosettes, palmettes, leaves, flower heads, and small geometric blossoms. Rosettes evoke beauty and cosmic harmony; leafy forms suggest regeneration and the continuity of life; palmettes convey prosperity and luxuriant growth. Ivory corner spandrels, accented by abrashed verdigris and soft crimson contours, contain hooked vines, serrated foliage, blossoms, and stylized palmettes that turn inward toward the central composition. Their vigorous botanical drawing establishes a symbolic framework of growth and continuity while giving the powerful red ground an architectural sense of enclosure.
A deep indigo Samovar turtle vine-scroll border gives the extraordinary masterpiece its final note of prestige, with repeating turtle-like palmettes, rosettes, angular leaves, and connecting vines progressing around the perimeter. The continuous vinery suggests endurance and interconnectedness, while the recurring blossoms carry the promise of abundance across generations. Double geometric meander guard borders complete the exquisite work of art with measured rhythm. With its saturated red field, luminous ivory silhouettes, commanding indigo accents, and impeccable craftsmanship, this rare Heriz possesses the visual authority and storied patina sought in a true collector’s carpet.
