The barrel-form stool is richly decorated in a vibrant Famille Verte palette of green, iron red, yellow, blue and soft pink.

Figural scenes wrap around the body, including children, flowering trees, butterflies and a wonderfully lively procession with a colorful mythical beast. Pierced double-coin motifs decorate both the sides and top, surrounded by intricate geometric, floral and Greek-key borders. Raised red bosses add another layer of dimension to the already incredibly detailed decoration.

I adore these old Chinese garden stools, and this one is particularly wonderful. There is something new to notice from every angle, yet the soft, playful color palette keeps it from feeling overly formal. At 18.5 inches tall, it works beautifully as a garden stool, petite side table or decorative accent and would be especially wonderful mixed into a Chinoiserie, traditional or eclectic interior.
