This striking piece is a handmade folk art face jug created by contemporary Georgia potter and educator Stephen Hawks. The jug features an ash or alkaline-based reduction glaze that creates a rich, metallic grey-green surface with glossy pooling around the eyes, nose, and deep brow wrinkles. It displays intense, expressive sculpted eyes with dark pupils, a long prominent nose, large stylized ears, and an open mouth showcasing individually rendered white clay teeth.
Stephen Hawks spent nearly two decades as a resident potter at the Westville living history museum in Georgia, where he took over for renowned Georgia Folk Potter D.X. Gordy. His work continues the historical Southern folk pottery tradition of creating character-filled "ugly jugs"
