A gilt bronze rose, modeled in full relief with a curled bud and a cluster of veined leaves, climbs alongside the brass rod that runs through the center of the frame and continues up to the black lamp socket. The contrast between the polished chrome structure and the warm gilt bronze sculpture gives the piece a sculptural, almost architectural presence rather than that of a conventional lamp base. The rectangular opening at the center lets light and reflection pass through the frame, so the piece reads well from several angles on a console or sideboard. Maison Charles was known through the 1960s and 1970s for lighting that treated the base itself as sculpture, often drawing on organic motifs such as flowers, animals, and plant forms rendered in bronze against polished or lacquered metal.
