Designed and crafted by Joop Brugman for his own home in Bruchem in 1975, this iron chandelier with copper details stands as an exceptionally rare example of lighting within the Bossche School movement. Light fixtures were seldom specially designed for Bossche School architecture. Instead, architects typically opted for existing, modest lamps. This chandelier forms a striking exception. Forged from turned iron with a deep, dark grey coating, the piece reveals both precision and restraint. Six elegantly curved arms descend symmetrically, each terminating in a copper socket holder. At the center, a perfectly round copper sphere anchors the composition, providing a subtle decorative accent. While its elegance is less common in Bossche School interiors, its strict geometry and balanced proportions express the architectural clarity characteristic of the movement. The combination of iron and copper results in a quietly monumental presence, aligning with the underlying principles of proportion and order. Brugman was a student and close collaborator of Dom Hans van der Laan, the leading figure of the Bossche School. Deeply influenced by van der Laan’s architectural theory, Brugman applied its principles to both his buildings and the objects within them. His rare lighting designs demonstrate how the language of proportion could be translated into the smallest architectural details. This chandelier remains in excellent condition and comes directly from the Brugman family, preserving its full provenance to the architect himself. It is an exceptionally scarce and pure Bossche School object, uniting architectural rigor with quiet refinement. Provenance; the house of Joop Brugman, Bruchem 1975.
