A characterful antique Japanese kotatsu dating from the middle of the Taishō period, made around 1920.

The low rectangular frame is constructed entirely from wood using traditional wooden joints. Years of use have given the surface a rich, weathered patina, with warm variations in colour, wear and visible traces of its original everyday function.

A kotatsu traditionally formed the warm centre of the Japanese household. A thick futon was placed over the wooden frame, while a heat source was positioned beneath or within the construction. Family members gathered around the table and placed their legs underneath the blanket to share its warmth during the colder months.

Its low proportions and restrained construction give the piece a distinctly Japanese wabi-sabi character. Today, it can be used beautifully as a low side table, plant stand, display for ceramics or as an independent sculptural object within a calm and natural interior.

In attractive antique condition, with clear signs of use, wear, discolouration, minor losses and irregularities consistent with its age and original purpose.
