This piece is a classic Charlie West buggy jug, handmade in Crawford County, Georgia. It features a traditional Southern tobacco-spit alkaline glaze over redware/stoneware clay, characterized by its deep, earthy brown color and characteristic vertical glaze runs down the high, rounded shoulders. Buggy jugs (also known as harvest jugs or road jugs) are historically designed with a squat, bulbous body and a low center of gravity to keep them from tipping over when riding in a horse-drawn buggy or wagon. This piece showcases a robust pulled strap handle connected directly to the narrow spout. Charlie West's work often carries his stamped initials (CBW) on the upper handle or a signature on the flat base.
While he is widely celebrated for his highly detailed face jugs and roosters, his classic utilitarian buggy jugs and traditional vessels beautifully highlight the foundational heritage of North Georgia stoneware.
