The unusual piece of American history was constructed … Read more On our hands is a unique and delightful 19th Century antique downspout. The unusual piece of American history was constructed of thin sheet metal and painted a golden color. It has a 6-pointed star with radiating points in the center, and leaf motifs on each of its sides. A pleated design frames the top and bottom of the star and leaves. Adding to the rich history of this unusual creation is that it came out of the collection of long time New York dealer Richard Smith “Smitty” Axtell, who passed away in 2021. Today it makes a delightful piece of wall sculpture that unites together Folk Art, primitive, architectural salvage, and Americana.

Richard Smith “Smitty” Axtell (Oct 13, 1947 — May 27, 2021) was owner of the Rookery and Axtell Antiques. He was one of the most highly regarded antique dealers in the northeast for 55 years.

Condition: Consistent with age and wear. Ding to right side, with bends to sheet metal and paint loss, with some flaking.
