A striking articulated lizard sculpture by celebrated Mexican designer Emilia Castillo, created in Taxco, Mexico, during the 1980s. Sculptural, whimsical, and exceptionally decorative, the piece exemplifies Castillo’s distinctive ability to reinterpret the natural world through the traditions of Mexican metalwork.
The lizard is constructed of solid brass with a silver-plated finish and features an intricately worked surface of repeating geometric scales. Its body is composed of individually articulated sections, allowing the sculpture to be gently positioned into different poses. A row of dimensional spines extends along the back, while expressive inset eyes, an open mouth, finely formed feet, and an articulated tail give the piece remarkable character and presence.
Emilia Castillo belongs to one of the most important families associated with the modern Mexican decorative arts tradition. She is the daughter of renowned silversmith Antonio Castillo, co-founder of the legendary Los Castillo workshop in Taxco. Growing up within this influential artistic environment, Emilia developed her own highly recognizable vocabulary, carrying forward the family's tradition of exceptional craftsmanship while introducing a more playful and sculptural approach to metalwork. Her designs frequently draw inspiration from Mexico's flora and fauna, transforming animals and natural forms into sophisticated decorative objects.
This lizard is particularly appealing as an example of Castillo's collectible animal sculptures. Its elongated articulated silhouette and reflective silver-plated surface give it considerable visual impact while retaining the handcrafted character associated with Taxco metalwork.
For an interior designer, the sculpture would make an unexpected statement on a cocktail table, console, library table, credenza, or within a curated cabinet of objects. For collectors, it offers an engaging intersection of Mexican design, Taxco craftsmanship, sculpture, and the continuing legacy of the Castillo family.
The piece retains its original Emilia Castillo hallmark:
