Sune Bäckström was one of Sweden’s most accomplished bronze artists of the early twentieth century, celebrated for combining refined craftsmanship with a distinctly Scandinavian sense of proportion and restraint. Working during the 1920s and 1930s, he developed a sculptural language rooted in Swedish Grace, where classical elegance met the emerging ideals of modern design. His bronzes are admired for their architectural silhouettes, balanced compositions, and richly patinated surfaces that continue to mature beautifully with age.
Sune worked closely with his brother, Wanja Bäckström, and together they became central figures in the family enterprise, Bäckströms Metallvarufabrik. The workshop earned an outstanding reputation for producing finely cast bronze objects of exceptional quality, ranging from decorative vases and jardinieres to lighting and architectural metalwork. Every object reflected the firm’s commitment to traditional foundry techniques, meticulous finishing, and carefully controlled patination, resulting in pieces that possess both artistic presence and lasting durability.
The brothers belonged to a generation of Swedish designers who elevated everyday decorative objects into works of art. Rather than relying on excessive ornamentation, their designs emphasized clean lines, harmonious proportions, and the expressive qualities of the bronze itself. This philosophy placed their work firmly within the Swedish Grace movement while anticipating the simplicity that would later define Scandinavian Modernism.
Today, original works by Sune Bäckström are increasingly sought after by collectors, interior designers, and galleries worldwide. Their rarity, historical importance, and exceptional craftsmanship make them highly desirable examples of early twentieth-century Swedish decorative arts. This vase is an excellent representation of Bäckström’s artistic vision, combining sculptural elegance with the timeless quality that has made his work enduringly collectible for nearly a century.
