The chair retains … Read more A rare early 20th-century Fischel bentwood armchair, Model No. 6048, associated with the design of Otto Wagner. The chair retains its original Fischel manufacturer’s label beneath the seat, providing important evidence of its production history. Particularly notable are the unusual brass sabots to all four legs, together with the sculptural bentwood construction and richly patinated dark finish. The design reflects the transition from historicist bentwood furniture towards the functional and architectural language of Viennese Modernism around 1900. Fischel was an important Central European bentwood manufacturer, with production associated with Niemes and Vienna.
