This wonderfully detailed Southern folk-art scene depicts rural Lowcountry life centered around a small wooden cabin beneath monumental live oak trees draped in Spanish moss. Figures gather around the home and yard, with chickens, a dog, cultivated fields and a winding dirt road completing the narrative composition.

Outlaw was known for documenting African American life and the rural South as he remembered it from his youth. His paintings frequently portray cabins, cotton fields, farm life and everyday scenes from South Carolina during the mid-20th century. The painting’s intimate scale is contrasted beautifully by its remarkable amount of narrative detail.
