Sculptural ceramic vessel by Paul Soldner (American, 1921–2011), an influential figure in postwar American ceramics and a pioneer of American Raku.
The asymmetrical vessel is formed with a broad, compressed body rising to an intentionally altered upper section with a torn, irregular opening, folded clay and incised linear detailing. Its dry, tactile surface moves between warm cream, blush pink, smoky charcoal and brown, with loose gestural markings extending around the form.
The contrast between the controlled vessel body and disrupted upper surface reflects Soldner's experimental approach to clay, while atmospheric variations from the firing become an integral part of the composition.
Dimensions: 10.5"W × 7"D × 8.5"H
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks or repairs. Irregularities, rough edges, firing variations and disruptions to the form are intentional and original to the artist's process.
Marking: Impressed with Soldner's distinctive chop near the upper shoulder.
