This authentic piece of indigenous Oceanian art is a hand-painted bark cloth from the Lake Sentani region of West Papua, Indonesia, traditionally crafted from the beaten inner bark of the khombouw tree.
Characterized by its textured, organic, tan-brown surface, the rectangular textile features a striking and symmetrical geometric design aligned vertically down the center. The focal point consists of a stacked column of elongated, eye-shaped diamond motifs meticulously outlined in dark charcoal black and deep reddish-brown earth pigments.
The centers of these interlocking diamonds are embellished with bold, fluid spiral patterns, while alternating geometric pockets are filled with contrasting bright white clay pigment, creating a rhythmic and vibrant optical movement.
Framing the top and bottom of the central pattern are four curved, parallel white lines that flare outward like stylized fringes or tassels, grounded by heavy black borders. This expressive visual language is typical of traditional Sentani folk art, where abstract geometry often translates sacred elements of nature, such as fish scales, rippling water, and ancestral protection motifs.
