Hand-carved from a single plank of hardwood, this door presents a bolder, more sculptural read of Mali's Dogon and Bamana geometric tradition. Two large triangular fan shapes radiate toward each other from opposite edges, meeting at the center to form a striking hourglass silhouette, framed within a plain carved border. A band of diagonal chevron hatching runs along the base. A carved tab at the top marks where the door once fit its frame, and a small drilled hole nearby likely once held a cord or fastening. The reverse is left plain and heavily weathered, in contrast to the crisply carved front.
Genuine age is evident throughout in the wood's uneven patina and honest surface wear. Mounted on its custom stand, the door's bold hourglass composition reads as confident, minimal sculpture from across a room — a strong graphic anchor for an entry, hallway, or the wall above a low console.
Antique Dogon or Bamana carved door from Mali with a bold hourglass sunburst motif formed by two converging triangular fans. Genuine antique wear, mounted on a custom stand.
Q: Were carved doors like this purely decorative, or did they serve a practical purpose in Dogon and Bamana households?
A: These doors were fully functional first — fitted to granary, house, or shrine openings to secure grain stores and living spaces. The carving itself often carried protective or symbolic meaning alongside its decorative value, meaning the same door that kept a household secure was also expected to carry visual weight within the community. That dual function is part of why doors like this one were carved with such care rather than left plain.
