Hand-carved from a single length of hardwood, this door carries the familiar geometric vocabulary of Dogon and Bamana doors from Mali, arranged around a striking pair of concentric circle motifs that read like twin suns or watching eyes. A band of shallow scalloped arcs crosses the top of the panel, framed by narrow ridges, before giving way to the two radiating circles, each cut in fine, evenly spaced rings. What sets this piece apart within the collection is its patina: rather than the deep reddish-brown tone typical of many Dogon and Bamana doors, this panel has bleached to a lighter, silvery gray-brown from prolonged sun exposure, giving the carved rings a soft, driftwood-like glow. A carved tab at the upper left marks where the door once fit its frame.
The wood shows the honest wear of genuine age throughout — fine cracking along the grain, a naturally worn silhouette, and the bleached, weathered surface that gives this piece its distinct character. Mounted on its custom stand, the door's pale tone and bold twin-circle carving make it a versatile, lighter-toned anchor for spaces that call for something softer than the collection's darker pieces.
Antique Dogon or Bamana carved door from Mali with a twin concentric-circle motif and a distinctive sun-bleached, silvery patina. Genuine antique wear, mounted on a custom stand.
Q: Why do some antique African doors have a lighter, sun-bleached patina instead of a deep brown finish?
A: Patina color depends heavily on how a piece was stored and used over its lifetime. Doors exposed to direct, prolonged sunlight gradually bleach to a lighter, silvery gray-brown tone as UV exposure breaks down surface pigments in the wood, while doors kept in more sheltered conditions tend to develop a deeper, richer brown patina instead. Both are equally genuine signs of age — the difference reflects the piece's specific history rather than one being older or more authentic than the other.
