Rather than a dust jacket, each volume was issued in its own matching cardboard slipcase — a format that reads well as a cohesive run of color and gilt along a shelf.

This lot includes fifteen volumes: The Book of Proverbs; Fathers and Sons (Turgenev); Peter Ibbetson (George du Maurier); The Romance of Tristan and Iseult; The Life of Samuel Johnson by James Boswell, with marginal comments by Mrs. Piozzi (Volumes II and III only); Ovid's Metamorphoses; Prometheus Bound (Aeschylus) bound together with Prometheus Unbound (Shelley); Twice-Told Tales (Nathaniel Hawthorne); The Swiss Family Robinson; The History of Tom Jones (Henry Fielding), illustrated edition; The Red and the Black; and The Essays of Montaigne, Volumes I and 2 with companion Handbook.

The set displays as a full run of original cloth colors — grey, red, slate blue, cream, black, tan, rust, and brown — each with gilt-stamped titling. Condition is consistent with age and use: cloth spines show typical toning, and the cardboard slipcases show general wear and soiling at the opening edges. Gilt titling remains legible throughout.
