Coquilla nut boxes had a variety of uses according to Ackermann’s Repository. In April, 1812 Ackermann’s wrote about the popularity of these imported items made from the fruit of the Brazilian Palm tree. Because they were hard and easily polished they could be made into decorative items for the table, toiletry as well as women’s sewing tables. This box may have been used as a thimble or needle case or as a pomander. It still has evidence of polish. It opens via twisting the two halves. Tiny holes are on the top and bottom and are evidence of it being carved or polished on a lathe. See less
