The … Read more This is rare very large Shona sculpture of a resting bird carved out of mottled black serpentine or springstone. The piece is attributed to legendary Shona artist, Jonathan Mhondorohuma and is roughly incised on the base with his stylized 'JM' monogram, as is typical for the artist.

The piece also bears the marks 'NA:SN' indicating that it was listed in the National Arts Foundation Archive registry. The number '51' is also incised.

This is a very large Shona sculpture. It stands about 26" tall making it exhibition grade, not made for the tourist trade. You would have a hard time getting it home in your suitcase because it probably weighs close to 100lbs. This being the case, we can only offer Chairish in-home shipping. We have taken the added expense of this into consideration in our asking price. We do welcome reasonable offers on this fabulous piece.

It measures about 26"h x 10"d x 9"w.

The work is in good vintage condition, it has some scuffs, particularly to the back which is sometimes used as the base, since it represents the bird's true orientation. But this work is traditionally designed to stand upright. There are natural flaws and stone variations throughout the work, as would be expected. See less
