PPolychrome woodblock print (nishiki-e) on paper Japan, Edo period, mid-19th century. A refined nishiki-e woodblock print depicting an elegantly dressed woman standing within the interior of a traditional Japanese residence, executed in the sophisticated pictorial language of the Utagawa school. The composition, characteristic of the mature production of Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), combines the grace of bijin-ga (images of beautiful women) with references to Kabuki theatre, a recurring theme in the artist's prolific oeuvre. The female figure, shown in a poised and introspective gesture, is dressed in an exquisitely patterned blue kimono with contrasting orange and white undergarments. Her elaborate coiffure, delicate facial features, and restrained expression embody the refined feminine ideal celebrated in Edo-period ukiyo-e. The carefully rendered architectural setting, sliding screens, decorative textiles, and vertical calligraphic cartouches enrich the composition, creating a harmonious balance between figure and interior space. Printed using the multi-block nishiki-e technique, the work displays exceptional precision in registration and a refined colour palette dominated by cool blues, soft greens, and warm ochres. The intricate textile patterns and subtle tonal gradations demonstrate the technical excellence of Edo-period woodblock production. Artist, publisher, and censor seals visible within the composition further support its origin within the official publishing system of nineteenth-century Japan. The print is in very good overall condition, with fresh colours, a strong impression, and well-preserved detail throughout. Minor age-related toning, light handling wear, and slight marginal imperfections are present, consistent with its age. The sheet remains structurally sound, with no significant losses affecting the printed image. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
