Polychrome woodblock print (nishiki-e) on paper Japan, Edo period, mid-19th century. A finely executed nishiki-e woodblock print depicting a dramatic scene from the Japanese theatrical tradition, most likely inspired by the Kabuki repertoire. The composition portrays an imposing samurai, identified through his richly ornamented costume and ceremonial sword, confronting an elegantly dressed noblewoman accompanied by two attendants. Their expressive gestures and intense gazes create a dynamic narrative, characteristic of the theatrical prints produced during the late Edo period. The upper register contains a cartouche featuring a poetic landscape vignette with Mount Fuji and accompanying calligraphy, together with the title "Thirty-six Selected Poets" (Sanjurokunin Shu), integrating classical Japanese poetry with scenes from contemporary theatre. This juxtaposition of literary and dramatic subjects was a popular format among Utagawa-school artists during the 1850s and 1860s. Executed using the sophisticated nishiki-e (full-colour woodblock) technique, the print displays exceptional chromatic harmony and meticulous carving. The elaborate textile patterns, refined facial expressions, and richly detailed architectural and natural elements exemplify the technical excellence of Edo-period printmaking. The balanced composition and vivid palette of greens, oranges, browns, and blues further enhance the visual richness of the scene. The presence of artist, publisher, and censor seals within the margins is consistent with official Edo-period production and contributes to the historical authenticity and documentary interest of the work. The print is in good overall condition, retaining strong, well-preserved colours and a clear impression. Minor age-related toning, light handling wear, and slight rubbing are present, together with small marginal imperfections and occasional foxing consistent with its age. The sheet remains structurally sound, with no significant losses affecting the printed image, presenting well overall. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
