A contemporary typographic portrait of American musician and poet Patti Smith, created by British artist Mike Edwards as part of his Alchemy of Words series.
Constructed entirely from layered text, the composition operates simultaneously as image and language. from a distance, the work resolves as a tonal portrait; on closer inspection, it reveals a dense field of typographic elements, reinforcing the central role of words within Smith’s artistic identity.
The artwork is cleverly composed using text excerpts and adaptations from A Season in Hell by Arthur Rimbaud — a writer who profoundly influenced Smith throughout her career. By building Smith’s likeness entirely from language, Edwards creates a direct connection between poetry, portraiture and artistic identity.
Produced in 2019, this example is signed and numbered 4/25, an early impression from a small edition of 25. The print is executed on archival Hahnemühle fine art paper and presented in a clean contemporary frame, ready for display.
