A vintage Charleston architectural print by celebrated South Carolina artist Elizabeth O’Neill Verner (1883–1979), one of the leading figures of the Charleston Renaissance.
HAND SIGNED IN PENCIL BY ELIZABETH O’NEILL VERNER AND INSCRIBED “REPRO.” BY THE ARTIST.
The work depicts an atmospheric Charleston street scene with historic architecture, piazzas, ironwork, shuttered windows and figures along the sidewalk—details characteristic of Verner’s evocative portrayals of the city and its historic neighborhoods.
This is a period reproduction after one of Verner’s original works, rather than a limited-edition etching. Of particular note, the print appears to be personally signed in pencil by Elizabeth O’Neill Verner beneath the image and inscribed “repro.” Verner is documented as having signed and designated reproductions of her work in this manner during her lifetime. Her printed signature and copyright symbol also appear within the image at lower right.
Verner was an important artist, preservationist and chronicler of Charleston during the 20th century. Her etchings and drawings of the city’s architecture, streets and residents helped define the visual character of the Charleston Renaissance and remain highly collectible today.
Presented under glass with a wide mat in a simple black painted wood frame. The frame, backing and hanging wire appear to be older and have likely been with the print for many years.
Provenance: Descended by inheritance through a prominent Charleston family collection.
Condition: Good vintage condition with age-related toning and discoloration to the paper and mat, particularly around the perimeter of the image. The black painted wood frame has surface wear, rubbing and small losses consistent with age. The older backing and hanging wire remain in place. Reflections visible in some photographs are from the glass and are not part of the artwork. Please see photographs for additional condition details.
An evocative period example of Verner’s Charleston imagery with the added interest of her apparent pencil signature and handwritten “repro.” notation.
