Southeast Asian baskets utilize split structural bamboo or rattan cane woven over a dense, rigid structural framework, giving them a self-supporting, firm, and wood-like solidity. Traditional utilitarian vessels built for storing and carrying dry agricultural products like sticky rice are intentionally unlined to allow the natural fibers to breathe. Most authentic tribal and regional folk-art pieces made for daily village use or local trade were crafted anonymously without artisan labels, brand stamps, or maker signatures. This is a particularly nice example with the pretty contrast pattern on the lid and the body of the basket, and it’s a rare size because it’s very difficult to maintain a difficult chevron pattern across a wider area.
