Spherical lidded box designed by Hans Achtziger for Hutschenreuther in Germany during the 1970s. Made from soft-white bisque porcelain, the piece has a finely textured relief extending across both the rounded base and domed lid. The near-spherical silhouette feels quietly futuristic, while the matte unglazed surface gives the object a soft, tactile character.
The box can be used as a bonbonnière, jewellery holder, or purely decorative object. Its compact sculptural form works particularly well on a dressing table, bedside cabinet, sideboard, or open shelf. The matte white surface pairs easily with chrome, smoked glass, travertine, or dark wood, bringing a restrained Space Age note to an interior.
Hans Achtziger (1918–2003) was a German porcelain modeller and designer. He trained at the State School for the Porcelain Industry in Selb and later worked for Hutschenreuther, where he served as director of the art department before heading the company’s form and decoration studio. His extensive output included tableware, decorative vessels, and numerous porcelain animal sculptures.
Hutschenreuther traces its origins to 1814, when Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther established a porcelain factory in Hohenberg an der Eger. His son Lorenz founded a separate factory in Selb in 1857, which developed into one of Germany’s leading porcelain manufacturers. The two branches merged in 1969, shortly before this box was produced. This piece has an attribution mark,
