British designer david mellor (1930-2009) is widely regarded as one of the most significant and versatile industrial designers of the twentieth century. He was elected a royal designer for industry in 1962, appointed o.b.e., and described by sir terence conran as "britain's most serious, modest and greatest post-war product designer". While best known as the "king of cutlery," mellor's work also included furniture designs that embodied his philosophy of "good design for everybody".
this specific pair of accent chairs belongs to mellor's 700 range, produced between 1970 and 1975 and winner of a design centre award in 1974—a mark of exceptional british design achievement. The chairs feature a sleek chrome and steel frame construction with pvc cushions, exemplifying mellor's "instinctive modernist" approach that prioritized honest materials, clean lines, and functional integrity. Mellor's background in street furniture design, including his iconic bus shelters and traffic lights, informed his approach to seating—creating pieces that were robust, practical, and elegant without pretension. The significance of this design is underscored by its inclusion in the permanent collection of the victoria and albert museum in london, where an example of the 700 range chair is held with the accession number circ.120-1977 .
the chrome and steel frames showcase mellor's sheffield steel heritage and his commitment to industrial manufacturing methods that did not compromise on aesthetic quality. A pair of these chairs offers the collector a rare opportunity to own a piece of british design history from a designer whose work has quietly shaped everyday british life for over half a century.
