Large Japanese hand-carved duck sculpture executed in sugi (Japanese cedar) and dating to the Showa period, circa 1955–1985. Measuring approximately 14.5 inches in length, the figure displays deeply textured grain created through the traditional uzukuri technique, which accentuates the natural growth rings of the wood. The surface has been treated in the yakisugi manner, producing a rich tonal contrast that enhances the sculptural character of the carving. The duck retains its original inset glass eyes and is rendered with naturalistic proportions and detailed feather modeling. Unmarked, as is often the case with domestic-market folk craft pieces, the sculpture reflects the Japanese tradition of decorative woodworking and folk art, where craftsmanship and material expression are central to the design.
