An exceptional, finely engineered mid-century tribal tayaan storage basket crafted by the Bontoc people of the Cordillera Central region, Northern … Read more An exceptional, finely engineered mid-century tribal tayaan storage basket crafted by the Bontoc people of the Cordillera Central region, Northern Luzon, Philippines. Of robust, flared rectangular form with rounded shoulders, the basket features a multi-part construction consisting of a fitted, tightly woven lid over a conforming body, terminating in a thick, carved solid wood base frame.
The walls are executed in a dense, multi-layer diagonal herringbone twill using split rattan and bamboo peel, flanked by integrated loop carrying handles bound at the upper shoulders. The entire vessel displays a remarkable, deep-toned molasses oxidation and glossy dark patina, acquired through traditional exposure to domestic hearth smoke.
