A midcentury modern surrealist oil painting on canvas titled “Mr. Otto” by John Morris. Hand signed lower right and titled lower left. Circa 1950s. A whimsical composition that features a clown-like figure dressed in bold red-and-white striped pants and a blue beret, holding a yellow umbrella and a bouquet of flowers. The sparse, dreamlike background and miniature car at the figure’s feet lend a surreal and symbolic quality. Rendered with crisp lines and delicate color balance, the work reflects Morris’s ability to infuse character studies with narrative depth and emotional nuance.
Provenance: From the collection of Northwood University in Midland, Michigan; proceeds of the sale will go towards the University’s endowment. Dimensions: 48.5”h x 57.5”w x 2”d (framed). In good vintage condition. Full condition reports are available upon request.
John Morris (1920–1991) was an American impressionist painter from Laguna Beach, California. He began his career as a teenage portraitist and served as an official WWII combat artist, with work exhibited at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C.—a rare honor. Morris established an art center in Palm Springs in 1958, mentoring numerous figures from the film industry before devoting himself fully to painting. His work is held in the collections of the Santa Barbara Museum, Honolulu Academy of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, among others. He has been collected by notable figures such as Mrs. Aristotle Onassis, Bing Crosby, and Frederick Loewe. In 2006, his work was posthumously honored by inclusion in the Vatican galleries.
