A tennis lover and Impressionist art collector? This lovely painting ticks both boxes. Painted in the Impressionist impasto style on hardboard, this piece captures a moment in time at the Wimbledon tennis tourney. In the forefront, one sees 3 "ball girls" at the ready to race onto the court. In the background are other outdoor courts, spectators, and a distinctive red-roofed building believed to be the AELTC (All England Lawn Tennis Club) Clubhouse.
Extensive research into Wimbledon history of the mid 20th century suggests that the painting was created at the timeframe which girls were first allowed to work the courts (1977) and during the period that their service was still restricted to the outer courts. The layout at the AELTC in the 1970s was comprised of tightly placed outdoor courts bordered by the Wimbledon Club/Churchill Road sector as well as impressive residential neighborhoods. From archived 1977 Championship photos and documentation of building renovations following that tournament, we can say with some certainty that this scene was from the 1977 event, a most celebratory one as it marked Wimbledon's 100th centennial.
The painting is unsigned but we acquired it directly from the estate of the artist, Ms. Peggy Hussey (later "Freeman", 1927-2016), so we are confident of its provenance.
This is one of two contemporaneous paintings she created from her visit to Wimbledon and retained in her personal collection; both are offered in the Chez Vous Antiques storefront on Chairish.
