This miniature work reproduces the four-panel grid from the iconic 1965–1966 "Jacqueline Kennedy III"—informally known as “Jackie III”—a screenprint composition by Pop Art legend Andy Warhol. This piece acts as a compact retrospective reference, combining Warhol's foundational exploration of media saturation, tragedy, and political celebrity into a 6" x 4" format complete with a stylized script signature.
SUBJECT: Following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, Warhol became fascinated by how mass media distributed grief. He cropped and appropriated specific press photographs of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy from Life magazine and national newspapers.
The four panels in this specific arrangement depict: Top Left (The Funeral Veil): A solemn portrait of a heavily veiled Jackie at the state funeral processional in Washington, D.C. Top Right (The Swearing-In): Jackie standing inside Air Force One in her bloodstained pink Chanel suit, right next to Lyndon B. Johnson as he took the oath of office hours after the shooting. Bottom Left (The Arrival): A profile silhouette taken upon the Kennedys' arrival at Love Field in Dallas, moments before the motorcade departed. Bottom Right (The Smile): A radiant, close-up photograph of a smiling Jackie in her pillbox hat, captured earlier during the political campaign trail at the arrival festivities.
Warhol sourced the photographs from the December 6, 1963 issue of Life magazine. Rather than arranging them chronologically, he juxtaposed different emotional states to mirror the shock of the tragedy. By arranging these out of chronological order, Warhol flattened time—juxtaposing the height of political glamor with the immediate numbness of historical trauma.
FORMAT: Measuring 6"h x 4"w, this item does not represent the full-scale, 40" x 30" limited edition screenprints released by Warhol and Original Editions in 1966 for the “11 Pop Artists, Volume III” portfolio. Instead, this is a vintage gallery-issued print or promotional miniature exhibition proof mounted onto a stiff board backing card. The front showcases a prominent "Andy Warhol" signature rendered in a heavy black marker or ink script directly underneath the print margin. Because the full-sized portfolio prints were traditionally signed or stamped on the reverse side (verso) by Warhol's studio or publisher, a clear front-facing signature on a miniature card format strongly suggests it was prepared as a collectible promotional piece, a signed book page, or a custom gallery announcement.
SIGNATURE: The way the ink trailing bleeds completely off the primary white print card and crosses the physical step onto the textured backing board confirms it was hand-signed in real ink after the card was mounted. While a printed or facsimile signature is locked onto its original layout layer before printing, the fact that the dramatic final pen swipe physical rides up and over the edge of the card proves it was done dynamically by a person holding a pen in real-time.
Andy Warhol used public book and card signings to market his work in the 1970s and 1980s. The thick, confident script line tapering into a sharp, thin point at the far right indicates rapid hand movement. This matches Andy Warhol’s known quick-signing style during gallery receptions and public book signings. Because of this hand-signed element, this piece changes from a standard vintage reproduction into an authentic piece of Warhol ephemera.
