Lisette Model (1901-1983) was a pioneering Austrian-born photographer whose unvarnished street photography reshaped 20th-century documentary practice. After emigrating to New York in 1938, her work was quickly recognized and published in Harper's Bazaar and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art. She became renowned for her bold portrayals of everyday life, capturing social contrasts with raw intensity. In 1949 she joined the faculty at the New School for Social Research, where she profoundly influenced generations of photographers, most notably Diane Arbus.
