Vintage Navajo Wedding Basket — 16” Southwestern Native American Coiled Basket
Offered is a beautiful vintage Navajo Wedding Basket, measuring approximately 16 inches in diameter, featuring traditional coiled construction and a striking polychrome geometric design in natural tan, black, and reddish-brown tones.
The basket has a substantial 16-inch diameter and an attractive concentric geometric pattern radiating from the center. The contrasting natural, black, and reddish-brown colors create a classic Southwestern appearance.
PERSONAL PROVENANCE
This basket has a particularly meaningful personal history.
It was received by the current owner as a wedding gift on April 7, 1990, on the occasion of her marriage to Hall of Fame baseball pitcher Jim Palmer. I will include an 8" x 10" professional color action Pitching photo of this Oriole Legend with this purchase. That particular photograph was also used as the cover to a Commemorative Wheaties Box in 1990. Jim Palmer was also known by women who were not baseball fans because of his National Jockey International underwear ads as he was one of the first to model Mens briefs worldwide.
The basket was given as a wedding gift by longtime friends who lived in Tesuque, New Mexico, just outside Santa Fe, and who attended the wedding in Baltimore, Maryland.
The friends purchased the basket from:
Turquoise Skies
4410 S. Mission Road
Tucson, Arizona
The basket was purchased in 1990 and has remained in the owner’s private collection since that time.
ORIGINAL INFORMATION SHEET
The basket is accompanied by its original period informational sheet headed “NAVAJO WEDDING BASKET.”
The sheet provides information concerning Navajo wedding baskets and includes care instructions. The original paper is included with the basket and will be shipped to the buyer.
The accompanying documentation does not identify an individual weaver, so no specific artist attribution is being made.
MEASUREMENTS
Approximately 16 inches in diameter
The basket has been measured edge-to-edge across its widest portion. A photograph showing the 16-inch measurement with a cloth tape measure is included.
CONSTRUCTION & DESIGN
Traditional coiled Southwestern basket construction with a beautifully balanced geometric design.
The basket features concentric bands surrounding a distinctive central radiating design, with contrasting natural, black, and reddish-brown tones.
CONDITION
Vintage condition consistent with age and hand craftsmanship.
The basket displays natural variations and minor irregularities in the fibers and coils consistent with an older handmade basket. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are considered part of the condition description.
The original informational paper has age-related wear, folds, discoloration, and deterioration consistent with its age and is included as found.
No attempt has been made to clean, restore, or alter the basket.
A SPECIAL PIECE OF SOUTHWESTERN HISTORY
This is more than simply a decorative basket. It comes with a documented personal history dating to 1990, original accompanying information, Tucson provenance, and a memorable story of having been given as a wedding gift at the owner’s April 7, 1990 wedding.
A wonderful opportunity for a collector of Native American art, Southwestern basketry, traditional coiled baskets, or historically interesting Americana.
Please review all photographs carefully. They are an important part of the description and condition of this vintage basket.
Kept in a NO smoking home
Ships quickly and carefully packaged. Because of its flared edges I will ship it in a sturdy box with ample bubble wrap or paper padding to prevent the weave from breaking under pressure during transit. The shipping cost will include all packaging materials plus insurance.
