This striking oil painting is a classic studio composition by the renowned American painter and illustrator Howard Chandler Christy (1872–1952). It features a full-length female nude in an artist's atelier.
SUBJECT: The Studio Setting provides the classic "behind-the-scenes" academic art environment. The model stands atop a draped, fabric-covered modeling platform, partially stepping behind a large wooden studio easel or changing screen.
Christy surrounds the model with rich, heavily draped fabrics—a brilliant, deep crimson curtain on the right contrasted against a dark, near-black fabric drape. This intense contrast utilizes classic chiaroscuro techniques to dramatically silhouette the warm skin tones of the model's back and hips.
ARTIST: Howard Chandler Christy is most famous historically for creating the "Christy Girl"—the elegant, confident, and highly idealized depiction of American womanhood that succeeded the Gibson Girl in early 20th-century magazines and World War I recruitment posters. In 1921, at the height of his commercial fame, Christy famously announced his retirement from standard magazine illustration to dedicate his life entirely to painting oils on canvas.
During the 1920s, he operated a highly active studio inside Manhattan's famous Hotel des Artistes complex, where this specific painting's setting—complete with professional modeling platforms, easels, and heavy window-shading drapes—was a daily fixture. The late 1920s and early 1930s marked the exact period when Christy became deeply preoccupied with the classical female form. During these years, he was commissioned to paint his most famous series of nudes, Fantasy Scenes with Naked Beauties, which was completed in 1935 to line the walls of the Café des Artistes downstairs from his studio. This studio painting matches the palette, loose brushwork style, and thematic exploration of those same model sessions.
While he spent decades painting portraits of the global elite including American presidents and first ladies, as well as celebrities, the artist maintained a deep lifelong fascination with classical figurative nudes. Following the Great Depression, he famously turned to large-scale mural projects featuring romanticized, nude female nymphs.
This specific painting represents his intimate studio work, celebrating the form and the literal workspace of the professional artist. The distinctive script signature "Howard Chandler Christy" is clearly visible in the lower-left corner, painted in a dark pigment that blends subtly into the floorboards and shadows of the platform.
FRAMING: The reverse side of this work features a stamp from Copeland Fine Art, a well-known art gallery and frame shop located in Columbus, Ohio, the artist's home state. Though the gallery closed in 2008 following the owner's retirement, the stamp verifies that this piece was professionally handled, preserved, and framed within the secondary art market in Ohio. The painting is mounted in a tiered, modern silver-and-black accent frame that nicely complements the dark shadows of the drapes.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Bottom left (photo #7) Unframed dimensions: 21 inches high x 13 inches wide.
