A man is following the path down to his fishing boat at the edge of the water where cows graze against a forested background. In the distance there is a bridge formed atop ancient ruins of Roman columns. Possibly an Italian view. Original cove frame now polished.

The French painter, Louis Hector Leroux, was born on December 27, 1829 at Verdun and died on November 11, 1900 in Angers.

The son of a wigmaker-hairdresser, Louis Hector Leroux was admitted in 1849 to the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.

In 1857, Leroux won a second prize in the Prix de Rome for his composition on the theme of the Resurrection of Lazarus. This success allowed him to become a resident at the Villa Medici in Rome.in 1857. During his time in Rome, he became a member of the Caldarossi group.

Leroux made his debut at the Salon of painting in 1863, and won medals on several occasions. He was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1877. See less
