A striking late 19th-century spelter sculpture lamp depicting one of the celebrated Marly Horses, after the monumental sculptures by French artist Guillaume Coustou (1677–1746).
The dramatic composition features a powerful rearing horse restrained by its groom, beautifully modeled with wonderful movement and detail throughout. Cast in spelter, a zinc-based alloy commonly used for decorative sculpture during the Victorian era, the figure has developed an attractive aged surface and patina and rests on a substantial black-painted wood base.
Coustou’s original Chevaux de Marly were commissioned by Louis XV for the Château de Marly and completed in the 1740s. Their dramatic imagery became enormously popular during the 19th century, inspiring numerous decorative bronze and spelter reductions for European interiors.
This example has been converted or fitted as a table lamp, making it an especially impressive statement piece. At approximately 33 inches tall, it has wonderful scale for an entry table, library, study, living room, or traditional maximalist interior.
