Briggs, c.1827 : an original antique steel engraving titled "spaniards & peruvians", engraved by w. Greatbach after the celebrated historical painting by henry perronet briggs, r.a. The print was published in london around 1827 by h. Wilkinson. The engraving depicts the dramatic first meeting between the spanish conquistadors and the inca people of peru. At the centre of the composition stands an inca noble, traditionally identified as atahualpa, facing a spanish friar presenting a christian text, while francisco pizarro and his soldiers witness the encounter. The scene represents one of the pivotal moments in the spanish conquest of the inca empire and the beginning of a new chapter in the history of south america. Henry perronet briggs (1791–1844) was one of britain's leading historical painters and a royal academician. His original painting was exhibited at the royal academy in 1827 and was subsequently engraved by w. Greatbach, one of the finest british engravers of the period. The engraving is executed with exceptional detail and subtle tonal gradation, faithfully reproducing the dramatic composition of the original painting. It is both an impressive decorative artwork and an important historical representation of early european contact with the inca civilisation. This is an original antique engraving printed in the nineteenth century. It is not a modern reproduction. Maker: w. Greatbach after: henry perronet briggs, r.a. Publisher: h.
