The sovereign, influenced by his numerous wives and concubines, including foreigners, is portrayed in his old age laying down his crown and scepter, held by two women, to kneel before a pagan statue characterized by a human body and donkey head, reminiscent of the Egyptian god Seth. The work is animated by the numerous female figures surrounding Solomon and the vibrant color choices that highlight the rich details of the garments and jewelry and the opulence of the scene. Positioned at the center bottom, a small dog (an iconographic symbol of loyalty and friendship) watches the scene with a disconsolate air, symbolizing the loss of divine fidelity.
