Dating to the … Read more Striking 19th-century Chinese carved wood sculpture of Guanyin, the Buddhist bodhisattva traditionally associated with compassion and mercy. Dating to the Qing Dynasty period, the figure is depicted seated serenely upon an elaborately carved lotus throne and flanked by two standing attendants.

The sculptural group is carved from a single section of wood and retains evocative traces of its original red and black polychrome and gilt decoration. Guanyin is shown in flowing robes with one hand raised in a graceful gesture, while the two smaller attendant figures create a beautifully balanced, symmetrical composition.

The elaborate pedestal features layers of carved lotus petals and decorative motifs. Centuries of natural surface wear have softened the original painted and gilded decoration, revealing warm wood tones and creating a wonderfully rich, aged patina.

The reverse features a prayer panel, according to the original catalog description.
