Executed in the … Read more Striking set of six antique carved oak dining chairs dating to the early 20th century, circa 1900–1925. Executed in the Jacobean/Renaissance Revival tradition, the chairs feature richly aged oak frames, tall architectural backs, turned spindle galleries and substantial turned legs joined by elaborate stretcher bases. The most distinctive feature is the pair of individually carved figural male heads crowning each chair back, giving the set an unusual Old World character and sculptural presence. These wonderful carved details, combined with the substantial turned construction and warm aged surface of the oak, make the chairs particularly decorative from every angle. Each chair features an upholstered back and removable/upholstered seat. The existing pink-and-cream patterned upholstery is later and is in distressed condition. The chairs are being offered as restoration/reupholstery candidates. The frames remain strong and substantial, making this an excellent opportunity for a designer or collector to select new upholstery while preserving the antique carved frames. The backs show an older secondary fabric beneath/behind the current upholstery, further illustrating the chairs’ long history of use and reupholstery. A wonderfully decorative complete set with authentic age, surface wear and patina throughout. Particularly well suited to a historic residence, English country interior, library, dining room, or an eclectic contemporary setting where their dark oak and sculptural carving would provide contrast.
