Ainu ceremonial robe (generally known as Kaparamip) made from the inner bark fiber of Elm circa late 19th to early 20th century. This type of robe, hand-woven from the Elm fiber, is known specifically as Atsushi. The material renders the robe highly durable, breathable and water-resistant. The robe is always further decorated with contrasting dark cotton appliqué and white and red threads embroidery. The pattern placement is along the sleeves, bottom skirt of the robe and back shoulder. The motif Moreu (spirals) and Aushi (thorns) are believed to possess spiritual power and protect the wearer from evil spirits.
Culturally significant, the robe is unique among Japanese textiles and tribal attires in general.
This robe was acquired in Hokkaido, Japan, circa 1947 by the collectors and has been in the same collection since.
For a very similar Atsuhi Ainu Robe see Object Number: 1980.29 in the collection of Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.
