The auspicious attire was known as Uchikake and was worn by the bride during the wedding ceremony made from silk and heavy padding on the trailing skirt. The robe on offer has a light-yellow background on which elaborated embroidered with large peonies of shades of red and fuchsia in full bloom and knotted pine trunks with gold and silver needles. Symbol of prosperity and beauty, peony is one of the most beloved motifs in Japanese art. The evergreen pines represent long-lasting life and marriage. The bold and luxuriant colors and tight composition with focal points were meant to draw eyes to the bride. This kimono is dated to early 20th century, likely 1930s-1950s, and was worn as an outer robe over the inner garment during wedding ceremony. See less
