A Japanese woodblock print by Yoshida Hiroshi (1876-1950), entitled "Hirakawa Bridge". Part of his iconic series "Twelve Scenes of Tokyo" (Tokyo juni dai), the vertical format print was made in Showa 4th year (1929). It depicts the Hirakawa Bridge, which leads to the entrance of the imperial palace in Tokyo. The nighttime scenery under a full moon and clouds was executed in various shades of blue and "Bokashi" shading. The technique rendered the image a soft and dreamy ambience. On the left margin, the year and title were printed in ink. There is also a Jizuri ("self-printed") mark above, indicated it to be printed under Yoshida's inspection and considered to be up to his high technical standards. In-print seal and artist name on the lower right corner. Pencil signed the lower margin right, "Hiroshi Yoshida" and titled lower left.
Image size measures approximately 10"w x 15"h. This is an original print matted and framed and has not been examined out of the frame. Please mind the reflection on the glazed glass.
Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950) was considered one of the greatest artists of the Shin-hanga woodblock print style in the 20th century. Widely celebrated for his landscape work, not only sceneries in Japan but also around the world from his extensive travelling. Many exotic and iconic places in India, Europe and North America found their way in his work but presented in a traditional Japanese style.
A similar print with Jizuri mark is in the collection of National Museum of Asian Art Smithsonian among other leading museums, accession no. 1S1998.264.
