A modern ceramic Chawan (Tea Bowl) by potter Hino Yoshinaga (active post 1940s). Hand-molded and glazed in a white glaze. The bowl takes a simple shallow shape with wide open and slightly everted rim. The milky white glaze was evenly applied and features fine crackles around the inner rim that gradually disappear down the well and Shino glaze-like orange skin like crack dots on the exterior wall. Originally from Korea and used in daily life, the rustic style bowl was imported to Japan in Momoyama period and became popular and cherished by the tea master for Chado ceremony.
The bowl was a modern interpretation of the historical piece made in Izumo City of Shimane Prefecture by Hino Yoshinaga, a potter of the Hino lineage working in the family kiln Banshozan.
The bowl comes with its original wooden storage box (tomobako) and wrapping cloth. The box was inscribed on the lid: Chawan Banshozan Izumo with a seal. On the side of the box, there is an old paper label that identifies the potter as Hino Yoshinaga.
