A modern ceramic Chawan (Tea Bowl) by Korean potter Park Boo Won (Born 1938-). Park Boo Won is a celebrated ceramic artist who is known for reviving historical ceramic pieces such as tea bowl and moon jar from Joseon dynasty and often imbued them with a modern sensitivity. His tea bowls are well regarded in Japan and collected by tea masters and monks in temples.
Hand-molded and glazed in a warm mottled brown glaze mixed with black patches, the bowl takes a simple shape of Irabo chawan. Originally from Korea and used in daily life, the rustic style bowl was imported to Japan in Momoyama period and became popular and cherished by the tea master for Chado ceremony.
As a modern interpretation of the historical piece, the chawan has an austere appeal with its simple shape and subdued color. It comes with its original wood storage box with inscription under the lid that reads: Park Boo Won; Tea Bowl Named Winter Vessel, Shinba Togue of Daitoku-Ji.
Shinba Togue was a monk in Daitoku Temple in Kyoto, a tea ceremony master and also a famous maker for chado accessories. His work is often associated with the Daitoku-ji temple sub-temples, particularly Yotoku-in.
