A West German pottery vase by Scheurich, in a baluster form with a rolled collar rim and a heavy crackle glaze in silver grey, charcoal, and white. The surface reads like fractured stone or marble — a dense web of lightning-like dark veining over a mottled white ground, glossy and thickly applied, with the glaze pooling darker along the rim. The interior is finished in clean white. This crackle finish is unusual and rare compared to the more earthy Fat Lava styles for which they're known.
The base reads 504-30 Scheurich W. Germany. An exact creation date is unknown, but clues, such as the three-circle logo point to a late 80's make, potentially right before the reunification of Germany.
Scheurich Keramik was founded in Kleinheubach in 1928 and became the largest ceramics manufacturer in West Germany, dominating the market through the 1960s and '70s. The firm is central to the West German art pottery movement — the era of thick, textured, experimental glazes that collectors now call Fat Lava. Its pieces are marked on the base with a moulded model number: three digits for the form, then the height in centimeters.
